Coffee normally grows in places of rich fertile soil, noticeably volcanic soils, in high altitude and in tropical weather. It is said that fruits achieve their perfect nutritious state when grown on fertile land and watered and exposed to the right amount of sunlight. Fruits which are left to ripen before picking are said to have the perfect nutritional value.
Kona coffee is grown on the southwestern coast of Hawaii. For a decade and a half this Hawaiian coffee has been harvested in the region and has been classified as high quality coffee. Interestingly, this coffee defies one of the usual known requirements needed in growing perfect coffee, the elevation. Hawaiian Kona coffee is grown in a relatively low altitude. However, this coffee from Hawaii displays the characteristics and qualities of superior coffee. In fact, Kona coffee beans are some of the most sought after coffee beans in the world.
Hawaiian Kona coffee is grown on the slopes of Mount Loa above the Pacific. The condition of the shade grown coffee resembles that of Kona coffee, in the sense that both of them undergo a slow growing and ripening process. Shade grown coffee have the taller trees for shade that results in the slow ripening of the cherries or coffee beans. The natural climate of Hawaii provides a prefect cloud to shade the coffee beans from the intense rays of the sun. It is nature's process of perfectly "cooking" this 100% Kona coffee to perfection.
These conditions, along with the fertile volcanic soil, have made Hawaiian coffee deliver more than just alertness; it produces a coffee that is a great source of potassium, patothenic acid and riboflavin, and trace minerals like, magnesium, thiamin, niacin, phosphorous, folate and manganese. Hawaiian coffee is graded according to the bean size, uniformity and quality. There are four grades assigned to this coffee: "extra fancy", "fancy", "#1" and "prime". Kona coffee perfectly deserves its grade of "extra fancy" with its refined and smooth body, superior aroma, and the rich taste of butter, cinnamon and clove overtones.
