Because of the rarity of this coffee, the price is quite outrageous. You may have heard of Kopi Luwak in the 2007 movie, The Bucket List, where it is actor Jack Nicholson's beverage of choice and he carries a supply with him wherever he goes. It is known as the most expensive coffee in the world, but well worth it. The stomach acids and enzymatic action involved in this unique fermentation process produces the beans for the world's rarest coffee. It has been sold in the U.S. for up to $600 per pound and can fetch as much as $50 for a single brewed cup in some parts of the world. Due to the rarity of the Kopi Luak Coffee, no returns or refunds can be accepted. Kopi Luwak are robusta or arabica coffee beans which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Asian Palm Civet. This process takes place on the islands of Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi in the Indonesian Archipelago. "Kopi" is the Indonesian word for coffee and "Luwak" is local name of this small mammal. One of the “Luwaks” favorite foods is the red, ripe coffee cherry. While the bean is in the stomach, it undergoes a chemical process and fermentation. The bean finishes its journey through the digestive system and exits. Locals then gather the beans and sell them on to dealers. The resulting coffee is said to be like no other.
